To Frack or Not to Frack

In less than two months the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources will hold public hearings allowing the public to comment on their study of hydraulic fracking. In previous studies, fracking has been linked to serious water contamination across the country. The General Assembly is eager to drill in North Carolina yet too many questions have been left unanswered. North Carolina is not ready for the environmental trauma that comes along with hydraulic fracking.

The US EPA study is not expected to be released until 2012/2014 and data explaining the amount of natural gas in North Carolina will not be released by USGS until late 2012. With this in mind, and the potential hazards that fracking provides, we are asking the state to slow down on their decision.

Please get involved and join us for a community meeting on the topic. Colleen Kendrick from Deep River Clean Water Society and Elaine Chiosso from The Haw Riverkeeper will discuss the potential for drilling in Chatham and other adjacent counties. They will also speak about the politics of energy and how to protect communities and the environment from being fracked.

The meeting is Wednesday February 8th from 7pm to 9pm at Central Carolina Community College, building 2, multipurpose room. The address is 764 West Street in Pittsboro, North Carolina. We hope to see you there!
